The area of Isola di Capo Rizzuto<\/a> has many archaeological sites. The area is a\u00a0<\/span>protected marine reserve<\/a>. The castle at the town of Le Castella<\/a> is spectacular,\u00a0<\/span>seemingly floating out on the see with water on all sides and only a small path connecting it\u00a0<\/span>to the mainland. Le Castella Castle<\/a>, likely built in the 13th century for territorial defense, was part of a larger fortification system. Inside, remnants of Greek limestone blocks from the 6th century BC, arranged in a checkerboard pattern, and traces of Roman masonry are still visible. The current structure, dating back to the 15th century under Aragonese rule, consists of two defensive sections: one integrating pre-existing elements and another newly constructed on the shallow front to enhance protection.<\/span>\u00a0T<\/span>he fortress, with an irregular layout, incorporates a 14th-century Angevin tower featuring a stone spiral staircase. Between 1510 and 1526, Count Andrea Carafa added the quadrangular bastions. Capo Rizzuto is part of the “Saracen Coast,” linked to the history of the pirate Occhial\u00ec Pasha. Born in Le Castella, he was captured in 1536, converted to Islam, and became a feared Ottoman commander and governor of Algiers (1568), participating in the Battle of Lepanto<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Bronzes of Riac<\/a>e<\/a> were discovered by Stefano Mariottini, an\u00a0<\/span>amateur scuba diver from Rome. They turned out to be\u00a0<\/span>one of Italy\u2019s most important archeological finds of the\u00a0<\/span>last 100 years. The two sculptures look human and divine\u00a0<\/span>at the same time, between reality and myth. These\u00a0<\/span>renowned personages are wrapped in mystery, we don\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>know anything about their identity, paternity and origins. T<\/span>hese works are beautifully made and succeed in\u00a0<\/span>awakening deep feelings among bystanders. Some speak of\u00a0\u201cmagnetic force\u201d, \u201ceroticism\u201d, \u201chalo of fear\u201d. They\u00a0have been exhibited in Florence, then in Rome. Although the statues are cast in bronze, they\u00a0<\/span>feature silver lashes and teeth, copper red lips and nipples and eyes made of ivory, limestone,\u00a0<\/span>glass and amber paste. Today the statues attract about 130.000 visitors each year <\/span><\/span>and they are on display to the public at the Archaeological Museum<\/a> of Reggio Calabria<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In Stilo<\/a> it is possible to find an example of Byzantine church<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>architecture that\u2019s one of the most\u00a0<\/span>important and best preserved in Italy,\u00a0<\/span>certainly unique in Calabria. The building,\u00a0<\/span>dating back to the tenth century AC, also\u00a0<\/span>known as the Catholic Church of Stilo<\/span>, is a small structure, a Greek\u00a0<\/span>cross inscribed in a square in a typical\u00a0<\/span>model \u201cPentakoubouklon\u201d, developed in\u00a0<\/span>Constantinople, later spreading to the rest of\u00a0the Empire around the tenth century.\u00a0<\/span>What makes it very special is that this artifact represents the harmonious interplay of the five\u00a0<\/span>cylindrical domes that rise above the roof. The middle one has four mullioned windows, while\u00a0<\/span>the remaining domes have only a single window that illuminates the interior of the church,\u00a0<\/span>giving it momentum and highlighting spaces. The indoor area is divided into nine identical\u00a0<\/span>squares partitioned off by four spolia columns. The interior of the Catholic Church of Stilobearing\u00a0<\/span>features frescoes in several layers, which originally covered the entire interior of the church,\u00a0<\/span>bearing witness to five historical cycles.<\/span><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
